Vision and Values
Dr Ruth Wilson of Equalities in Education (EiE) is a specialist in equalities and diversity and an experienced researcher and report writer, with a background in
education. Her work is underpinned by the following core beliefs:
-
Everyone has a right to be treated fairly and with respect
-
Treating people fairly involves taking into account a range of factors, such as:
-
individual differences and needs
-
historical and contemporary contexts of exclusion, discrimination and harassment
-
We all have not only a legal responsibility but also a moral imperative to uphold human rights and social justice, promote equalities and challenge unlawful
discrimination and harassment
-
Education is fundamental to the process of promoting human rights, social justice and global citizenship
-
People learn best when they are actively engaged in the process; this applies to adults as well as to children and young people
-
Policy development, strategic decisions and organisational change should be based on evidence
In her own practice, she is committed to:
- Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of current developments in the field of equalities and diversity across the full range of protected characteristics,
including implications for equalities of current policy initiatives
- Developing and delivering training in which learners are actively engaged
- Behaving in a way that models good practice in equality, diversity and human rights
- Employing research methods that are both ethical and robust, using creative and participatory approaches
- Promoting evidence-based policy development, which draws on:
- rigorous, but sensitively handled, monitoring
- equality impact assessment and evaluation, including feedback from a diverse range of service users
- consultation and involvement of key stakeholders
This is a brief statement of Ruth Wilson's professional vision and values. Equalities in Education also has a full Equalities Policy.
